Tric of the Light

Somewhere along the way, I caught a bug. It's been such a while since I've been sick that this really knocked me out. Thankfully, I'm starting to feel a bit better now. So, for the past few days, I've mostly been lounging around the house, groaning like I'm on my last legs between all the sniffles, coughs, and sneezes.

It does mean that I had to miss a kung fu class for the first time. Yes, Tric has expanded her skills in arts to include the martial variant. Every Saturday, I journeyed to a nearby town to practice punching and kicking the air for about an hour—every Saturday except for today, unfortunately. I was already panting for breath taking my dog out for short morning walks; there was no way I could practice kung fu. All I would achieve is exhausting myself and infecting more people.
As usual, when I am feeling under the weather, I've been rewatching movies. I do this because if I find myself drifting off because of my disease-addled brain, it's not a problem. I know these movies backwards and forwards. So far, I've watched Labyrinth, A Knight's Tale, Ever After, and The Hobbit. Other ways I've occupied my time that wasn't trying to keep all my fluids on the inside of my body - I've played some more of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, restarting (once again) Spiritfarer, and trying out the new Civ 7.

Reading has been going slowly, at least that's how it feels for me. I've been reading The Pariah by Anthony Ryan. It's the first book in a trilogy and reads very classic fantasy. It's not bad, just slow. I wasn't aware that it would be so narrated. We're following the (recollection? autobiography?) of a man who was an outlaw and became a scribe? In some instances, it feels a little too much 'tell' and not enough 'show'. Whether I'll dive right into the sequel depends on if we see any pay off in this first book. I've managed to at least get a little less than halfway through the book and things happen but I'm not feeling very connected to the character.

Now to play more Civ 7 while trying to breathe.

A quick horror/science fiction read that I picked up because I wanted another fast-paced read. This book delivered precisely that.

Final Review: ⭐⭐⭐
It's a quick read and raises some interesting questions, but given its page count, it seems to try too hard to be philosophical and profound.

This was my first foray into the genre of LitRPG. I had seen it recommended as a fast and fun read, so when I was looking for something of that nature, I decided to give the first book a try. Now, seven books later, I'm going to try to gather my thoughts about the adventures of Carl, Princess Donut, and the universe of the Dungeon Crawlers.

This doesn't mean perfection, but it does mean I loved this series, and the next one is now an auto-buy for me. If you like sometimes over-the-top humor, characters with heart, science fiction, fantasy, and gaming, as well as some political intrigue, then I can recommend this series.
